Computer Used for Testing
WindowsNT4.0SP4 PentiumPro 200MHz AT Clone
Windows98 MMXPentium166MHz Sub-note PC
Digicam Used for Testing
Fujifilm DS-10(named DX-5 outside Japan)
Getting Started

Copy Fuzzy.exe to the folder of your choice then place a shortcut to Fuzzy on your Desktop. Fuzzy works as standalone utility, no DLLs or other drivers are needed. After startup you are presented with the window as seen left. It's very simple and easy to use.
To get started using Fuzzy with your camera you should:
- Turn off the digital camera and connect it to the computer's serial connection as usual, then turn on.
- Select Comm Port No. Default value is COM1:.
- Select Baudrate. Default value is 115200bps. Some of digicams(DS-7/DS-8)/computers can't support 115200bps. In such case, select 57600bps or lower.
- Enter folder name to download. Under this folder, Fuzzy.exe creates sub folders using the naming format 'YYYYMMDD-HHMMSS' for each folder created.
- Click Download button or push 'D' key to start download pictures.
- Click Cancel button or push 'C' key to interrupt downloading.
- Click Exit button or push 'E' key to terminate Fuzzy.exe. Comm port no., baud rate and download folder name are saved to the 'fuzzy.ini' file when terminate.
Tips for Fuzzy
Fuzzy starts download from the last(newest) picture. If you need to download the latest 4 pictures only, just click Cancel after 4 pictures downloaded.
FAQs
- I want to write a digital camera control program. Are there any documents of protocol?
- During the development of Fuzzy software, I referred to Fujifilm DS-7 communication protocol analysis written by Mamoru Ohno.
- Digicam connected correctly and the other software which is using serial port works fine, but Fuzzy can't find digicam and shows camera not responding message.
- If the other application such as Windows Fax monitor, palm-link, Nikonview, Win/CE-monitor, etc. is working, it holds serial port and Fuzzy can't use it. Close these applications and try again.
- I connected digicam to Olympus/Agfa/Nikon/Sanyo's serial cable, but Fuzzy can't find digicam.
- They seems the same as Fujifilm's cable, but 2 lines are exchanged. Please refer to Appendix.
- I'm using DS-7/DS-8 and it doesn't work with 115200bps.
- DS-7/DS-8 supports upto 57600bps, doesn't work with 115200bps
- I'm using DS-7/DS-8, it seems that estimated remaining time contains some of tolerance.
- Fuzzy uses 'Get Picture Size' command to calculate estimated time, but DS-7/DS-8 doesn't support it. Therefore Fuzzy uses '150KB' per picture to calculate at DS-7/DS-8, it may causes some of tolerance.
- Is Fuzzy a TWAIN compliant program?
- No it isn't. I don't recommend using TWAIN with digicams because they store images by JPEG format. If you once open a digicam's image from photo retouch software via TWAIN, it extracts original JPEG image to raw-bitmap data. When you save image, retouch soft re-compresses it to JPEG again. This process may lose some of image quality or enlarges file size, and all the additional picture information (timestamp, shutter speed, f-stop, quality mode etc.) will be lost. Therefore I strongly recommend doing that save the digicam's image to disk without TWAIN first, then re-touch it.
- Is there any plan of Fuzzy for Mac, PalmPilot or Win/CE?
- No, I don't have them and I don't know how to program. I attached source code, please use it if you need.
- Is Fuzzy Year2k compliant?
- Maybe...
Here's a serial cable diagram for fujifilm digicams. It seems the same as OLYMPUS/Agfa cables, but pin 3 & 5 are exchanged.
