国際ビジネス、渉外法務に役立つ実務表現 duty 【意味】 義務，職責，職務，任務，税金，関税 【参考】 ▷ 通例、「法的(法律的な)義務」”legal duty”を意味するが、「道徳的な義務」”moral duty”の意味でも使われる。 ▷「職務(任務)」<a task or an action that a person is required to perform as part of his/her job.>の意味では、複数形で使われることが多い。なお、わが国では、「職務上」という表現は、“in the course of duties”又は“as a part of one's duties”と表記しています。 ▷ 税金とくに関税を意味するが、明確にするために、”customs duty”などとすることもある。 ▷ an obligation arising from contract of the parties or the operation of the law; an obligation to act based on law, custom, ethics, or personal commitment. The term duty also refers to a tax on imported goods. 【用例】 ▷ have a duty to do →～する義務がある ▷ have a duty to ~ →～に対する義務がある ▷ have a strong sense of moral duty →強い道徳観念を持っている ▷ do[perform, fulfill, carry out] one’s duty →義務を果たす ▷ neglect[fail in] one’s duty →義務を怠る ▷ be under a legal duty to do →～する法的義務がある ▷ perform[fulfil, discharge] one’s duties →職務(職責)を果たす ▷ be fired for neglect of duty →職務怠慢で解雇される ▷ Your duties include answering the telephone. →あなたの職務には電話に応答することが含まれます。 ▷ Directors shall perform their duties for the Stock Company in a loyal manner. →取締役は、株式会社のため忠実にその職務を行わなければならない(会社法355条参照)。 ▷ (a) duty on imported wine and beer →輸入ワインとビールに課せられる関税 ▷ impose[levy, charge] (a) duty on ~ →～に税金(関税)を課す
