The goldfish lanterns are said to have been made by a bamboo craftsman named Shuhei Yashiro, whose ancestors were the flute player for the feudal lord Mizoguchi, as a summer toy for children during the Meiji period (1868-1912). It is said that when the Obon holidays approached, children would light candles and play by dragging them around at dusk. |
